Renewing our Traditions - a Plant Lover's Journey to Vermont

With Rosemary Gladstar & Robert Chartier
August 4 ~ 8th, 2010

“Leave Provence to the Provencals, and Tuscany to the Tuscans ~
the world is sweet enough right here”

~ Bill McKibben on Vermont

As we traveled the world on our Plant Lover’s Journeys, we often dreamt of offering a journey to Vermont. Last year we offered our first trip to Vermont and had such a great time and received such outstanding feedback, we couldn’t wait to do it again….Truly, one of the most beautiful plant rich places on earth, Vermont offers an endless variety of things to experience, enjoy and appreciate. There are the small charming villages, many unchanged since the 1700’s; the stunning Green Mountains; and Lake Champlain, considered the 6th Great Lake in North America. There are numerous small farms, goat farmers and artisan cheese makers, herbalists, vintage wineries, farmers’ markets and craft fairs. Beyond all of this, Vermont offers a sustainable and sane way of living that is hungered for in today’s world.

As environmentalist and naturalist Bill McKibben writes in Wandering Home, his wonderful book about Vermont, “In my experience the world contains no finer blend of soil and rock and water and forest than that found in this scene laid out before me ~ a few as fine, perhaps, but none finer. And no place where the essential human skills ~ cooperation, husbandry, restraint ~ offer more possibility for competent and graceful inhabitation, for working out the answers that the planet is posing in this age of ecological pinch and social fray.”

We’ll journey down the back roads and byways to some of our most beautiful villages and rural areas. Along the way we’ll visit small farms and meet with farmers and herbalists to discuss how they are revitalizing traditional farming methods. We’ll taste and sample all that’s delicious in Vermont from freshly baked bread, to newly harvested vegetables, herbs, fruits, local wines and cheeses. Dining will be a scrumptious affair prepared from delicious farm fresh food and local ingredients.

A Plant Lover’s Journey to Italy

Plant Lovers Journey Italy

Experience the Art of Good Living in Italy.

Sorry, this trip is full.  Our next Italy trip will be in the fall of 2012

Atop a broad hill in the countryside of Tuscany stands a sixteenth century villa, Certano, owned by Mario Baldassarrini and his wife Hedy. This expansively warm Siennese elder and his Swiss born wife will welcome us into their timeless and magnificent home. We will experience an enchanting and romantic 11 wonderful days focused on herbs, health, culture, and rejuvenation. Beautiful grape vineyards, olive groves, beehives, vegetable and flower gardens roll gracefully through the hills surrounding the villa as they have for 500 years. The hills are still actively tended, produce harvested and made into exquisitely delicious wines, olive oil, honey and food for the table. A church built over 1200 years ago rests between the winery and villa. The ancient walled city of Siena is just minutes away and Florence, one of the most renowned cities for art in the world, is an hour’s drive.

Pilgrimage is an age-old journey to sacred spaces and places.

We will be making pilgrimage throughout our journey, searching for the authentic, searching for the inner meaning and the interconnectedness. There are natural hot springs and spas to experience, walks through the bucolic countryside, teachings from local people, walled castles to wander in, and the profoundly exquisite art and architecture of Italy to lose oneself in.

And the food in Italy!

Need one say more? Italian food is among the freshest, simplest, healthy and elegant food served anywhere in the world. Each region has its own specialty and the atmosphere and ambiance around dining is an experience in itself. A meal is most often a leisurely, extended ritual of savoring food, friendship and wine.
