Herbs & Earth Awareness, 2009
Good people, good royal greening verdancy,
Rooted in the sun,
You shine with radiant light

Welcome to Sage Mountain.

Founded 22 years ago by Rosemary Gladstar and Karl Slick, Sage Mountain Herbal Retreat Center & Botanical Sanctuary is one of New England’s foremost learning centers for Herbs and Earth awareness. Located on 500 pristine acres in central Vermont, this beautiful piece of Earth Mother is a natural sanctuary and teaching site. There is an incredible assortment of wild herbs and flowers growing in habitats that vary from meadows, forest to swamp. Our wild neighbors include deer, black bear, moose, beavers, otters, fox and a wonderful variety of feathered folk that honor us with their presence. Over the years we’ve planted extensive gardens that feature at risk native medicinal plants. It is with a special feeling in our heart that we invite others to share in the bounty and teachings of this land with us. Throughout the year we offer a series of workshops that emphasize our relationship to Earth Mother and to each other. Our teachings encompass multi-dimensional traditions and experiences. All strive to bring us closer to ourselves and deeper in harmony with our heart space.
Though Rosemary is the primary teacher at the center, our staff has evolved to include many other fine herbalists, healers, and naturalists. Sage Mountain is a beautiful and inspiring place to learn. Surrounded by forest, fen and meadows, there are over eight miles of hiking trails, streams, and vistas that stretch out over several mountain ranges. Our facilities are pleasantly rustic and comfortable. Indoor facilities include a yurt, dome, and tipi as well as a large comfortable classroom with library, kitchen and indoor bathrooms. However, our favorite classrooms are the woodlands and wild gardens that surround us. Participants are encouraged to camp, but there is plenty of indoor dormitory style lodging. We also have a wood fired sauna and outdoor jacuzzi which are favorite places for easing aching muscles and star gazing.
To register or for further information on any of our programs please write or call. All workshops are purposely limited in space and generally fill up quickly; pre-registration is requested. A non-refundable/non-transferable deposit is required to hold your place. A map and further information will be sent to you.

The Science & Art of Herbalism guides you into the very heart of herbalism. It instills in the student both the necessary skills to practice this ancient healing art as well as a profound understanding of the spirit and essence of herbalism.
Rosemary Gladstar, your instructor throughout this course, brings a wealth of herbal knowledge, excellent training skills, and a passionate love of herbs to this course. Written in an inspiring and joyful manner, The Science & Art of Herbalism was designed specifically for students requesting a systematic, in-depth study of herbs but who were unable to attend full time residential herb programs. It contains a depth of knowledge and a lively student/teacher interaction seldom found in home study courses.
The course emphasizes:
- The Foundations of Herbalism
- Wild Plant Identification
- Medicinal Herbology
- Herb Gardening
- Herbal Preparation
- Natural Cosmetics
- Medicinal Formulation
- Earth Awareness & Ceremony
- Techniques of Harvesting, Drying & Storing Plants
Though it thoroughly instills in the student the practical skills necessary to practice herbal home health care, it doesn’t ignore the rich spirit and essence of herbalism. The heart of this course is the development of a deep personal relationship with the plant world.
Many of our students have written telling us that this course has been transformational and one of the most self- empowering studies they have undertaken.
How can a home study course be life transforming? Perhaps it is because of the nature of the subject.
Rosemary weaves the magic of nature, a reverence for life and a commitment to share the wisdom of herbs with others throughout her teachings.

Winter solstice, and the woods around Sage Mountain are quiet under a sky gone dusky by mid-afternoon. There is no wind, little sound, few tracks among the snow-laden conifers. The air has the rarefied feel of elevation. Everything is built into the Vermont hillside-gardens, outbuildings and yurt; even the log cabin lit against the encroaching dark rests on sloping ground.
Inside, the cabin is as noisy as the outside is not. Rosemary Gladstar is making tea, which in any case is more than a simple matter of submerging a bag of Lipton in water. She is choosing herbs from the over 200 jars in her apothecary, but mostly she is contending with the dogs that mill around her legs. The dogs crowd to be petted, bark indignantly for turns. Two of them are Rosemary's, another lives nearby, the third arrived today for a two-week visit. The visitor, an adolescent pup that belongs to Rosemary's step-daughter, keeps disrupting a tenuous equilibrium.Family Herbal by Rosemary Gladstar
